Differences between the various systems

Ultrasonic nebulizers with breath-activated aerosol release

  • Quiet operation
  • Mobile nebulizers with power supply unit, battery and car adaptor
  • Ultrasonic nebulizers create droplet size distributions with MMAD < 5 microns which are optimal for lung deposition. But the most important points are that the MMAD remains stable over long-term periods and that the particle spectrum can be reproduced.
  • Ultrasonic devices with breath-induced aerosol release generate a laminar flow stream for optimal pulmonary deposition.
    In such systems, aerosol release is actuated only by the patient´s inspiratory flow. This enables low losses and an efficiency of 65% to 75%.
  • Different patients have different tidal volumes. Our multisonic® adjusts to patient breathing patterns and delivers continuously an adequate amount of aerosol.
  • Good nebulizer performance, 0.50 ml/min for short-duration inhalation
  • Gently warmed aerosol has almost body temperature
  • High mist density, at least 200 mg of aerosol per litre of tidal air
  • The kinetic characteristics of the aerosol lead to increased output at the mouthpiece and better deposition

Jet nebulizers featuring continuous aerosol release

  • Good-quality jet nebulizers show droplet distribution patterns comparable to ultrasonic models. However, depending on the model, reproducibility of particle spectra cannot always be guaranteed.
  • Can be used by all age groups
  • All medications on aqueous basis, and suspensions can be aerosolized as well
  • Robust devices

  • In jet nebulizers, the compressed air stream produces a turbulent aerosol flow which lets a portion of the particles already impact to the upper airways.
    Compressed air generates aerosol mist in a continuous and „breath-enhanced“ manner. This results in large aerosol losses, and the nebulizer efficiency is only 20% to 35%.

Mesh-type nebulizers

  • A mesh-type nebulizer can be used both battery-operated or power supply-operated, it is handy and designed for portable use

  • Suitable also for toddlers and elderly persons

  • All drugs on aqueous basis

  • Portable with batteries and power supply unit

  • Larger droplets than in high-frequency ultrasonic nebulizers. MMAD is ca. 5 µm, i.e. 50% of droplets are smaller than 5 µm; this results in low central lung zone deposition.
  • Device-immanent continuous flow accounts for high aerosol losses (efficiency < 50%)
  • Mono-disperse aerosol, droplets smaller than 3.8 µm are not present at all (poor alveolar deposition)
  • Blogging of oscillating membrane cannot be excluded
  • The oscillating membrane needs to be replaced several times a year
