What aerosol forms are possible?
There are three different ways to generate aerosols. Devices available for aerosol drug therapy include:

  • Powder inhalers (DPIs)
  • Pressurized metered dose inhalers (pMDIs)
    The user inhales once to deliver a specific amount of the drug to several regions of the bronchial system. Depending on bronchial width and the breathing technique adopted, identical amounts of active agents are likely to produce different effects in different patients. Aerosol generated by the Respimat flows off gradually and independently of the patient┤s inspiratory flow.
  • Electric nebulizers (ultrasound, compressor, mesh)

Compressor nebulizers (jet nebulizer) generate aerosol by means of compressed air while employing a venturi effect.

Ultrasonic nebulizers generate aerosol by employing a vibrating piezoelectric crystal driven by an electric field. While two-chamber systems use coupling water to transmit sound waves, the more comfortable single-chamber systems aerosolize drug solutions without using additional means.

Mesh-type nebulizers employ an ultrasonic head to excite the inhalation solution into vibration and force the droplets through the static mesh disk. In vibrating mesh-type nebulizers, deformations or vibrations of the mesh-type disks help force the inhalation solution through the mesh screen.

Electric nebulizers are very versatile because of their ability to handle drug solutions and suspensions. A major advantage of compressed-air or ultrasonic nebulisers lies in their user friendliness; inhalation is easy and does not require coordination between inspiration and actuation of the inhaler. The patient can be sure that a correct amount of drug is delivered in each inhalation.

Both compressor and ultrasonic nebulisers are widely used by adults and children. Ultrasonic nebulizers have some advantages over compressor units, such as short duration of administration, quietness and particle size, i.e. the majority of particles is less than 5 Ám in dia.
